International Diploma Dairy Husbandry & Milk Processing

Introduction

Demand for milk and milk products is increasing rapidly, especially in developing countries. As a result, many (developing) countries are stimulating their dairy sector. However, dairy development is a complex issue. It requires technical skills and an efficient supply of inputs such as training and extension, concentrates, breeding bulls, A.I., etc.
It also requires a well-organised milk collection, processing and marketing system. Managerial skills are urgently required at all levels throughout the dairying chain.

For whom it is intended

A mid-career course for persons who contribute through teaching, training, extension and/or management activities directly or indirectly to the development of the dairy sector.

Your final destination

At the end of the course the participants are equipped with new attitudes, knowledge and skills in the field of dairying and milk processing. They are able to enhance their work performance.

Content of training/course

The 26-weeks-course consists of two sections, a general section and a specialisation section.
All participants attend the general part that provides broad basic knowledge of (rural) dairy development, the milk chain (production-collection-processing-marketing), animal husbandry, dairy farm management, training and extension and small scale milk processing. The specialisation section is meant to provide the participants with up-to-date knowledge and skills in a specific field.

Participants have to choose one out of the next three specialisations:

  • Training and extension: for persons working in smallholder dairy development projects, dairy producers’ organisations and for lecturers and trainers at vocational training centres and/or agricultural colleges. Technical and socio-economic aspects of smallholder mixed farming, service supply, producers’ organisations, rapid rural appraisal techniques are core issues.

  • Dairy farm management: for managers of (large) milk production units, research or breeding farms. A wide range of technical subjects is completed with management tools such as applied farm economics, technical and financial analysis of
    farm performance and planning.

  • Small-scale milk processing: for persons who are, or will be, working in the field of small-scale processing. Detailed study of the complete chain (procurement-processing-marketing) in small to medium scale private enterprises and dairy co-operatives, with a strong emphasis on its practical implications and on quality management.

Each specialisation matches the training needs of the individual participant as much as possible. Applicants must clearly indicate their preferred field of specialisation. All participants conclude with the same programme: an optional programme, presentation of their pilot project to fellow participants and staff, course evaluation and closing ceremony. On successful completion of the course, the participants will be awarded a diploma.
