Module Poultry Breeding Management And Incubation

Introduction

Commercial birds are produced in a very strict breeding programme.Breeding own replacements is possible (e.g. scavenging chickens) but not likely to result in highly productive birds. In this module other options to improve the genetic make up of the birds will be explored. Once poultry husbandry has developed, incubation becomes an essential
part of the production chain. The basic principles of artificial
incubation are the same for small incubators and modern large-scale setters/hatchers. The emphasis is this module will be on the technical management of medium to large hatcheries. A specialised category of poultry is Broiler Parent Stock where a balance is sought between acceptable egg production for reproduction and efficiently growing
broilers. This balance has important consequences for the management practices applied on Broiler Breeder Farms.
