Practical Management Course On Crop Protection

Introduction

Food safety issues and increased resistance of pests and diseases against pesticides are factors that require a thorough insight in and working knowledge of crop protection methodology for all people working in the agri- and horticultural industry.

For whom it is intended

Owners, managers and assistant managers of horticultural
companies, extension officers, consultants,
quality control managers.

Your final destination

Participants will gain:
• The ability to work out an crop protection programme
for their own situation where biological
and chemical control are balanced;
• Experience in accurate monitoring-methods to
assess the development phases of pest and
diseases;
• Overall insight in causes of pests and diseases
in horticultural crops and preventive measures;
• Considered strategic aspects of crop protection
at horticultural enterprises and its effect in
the consumer chain;
• Practical experience in (chemical) crop protection
in main horticultural crops;
• Upgrading managerial/technical skills in
the major aspects related to modern crop
protection.

Content of training/course

Contents
• Determination of threshold levels of pests and
diseases;
• Scouting and monitoring;
• Planning and implementing crop protection
activities;
• Selection-criteria and application of crop protection
equipment;
• Compilation of spraying systems: pump, nozzles,
droplet-formation techniques, air-support;
• Reducing the negative environmental impacts
of crop protection;
• Residue reduction in harvested produce;
• Maintenance of equipment;
• Knowing and recognising beneficial and predator
insects;
• Concept and rationale behind Integrated Pest
Management;
• Developing crop protection programmes with
IPM.

Methods:
Hands-on training sessions in the well equipped
PTC+ facilities (greenhouses, nursery, orchards
and workshops), demonstrations, lectures, gaining
skills and experience by working with
various watering and fertilising methods and
equipment in a practical situation.

Preliminary training required

• A Diploma and/or B.Sc. degree in Agricultural
Science with a major in Plant Production, or
equivalent qualification from a recognised
institute;
• At least three years experience in crop production
or closely related subjects;
• Competence in the English language;
• Willingness to perform manual work during the
course;
• Age preferably between 25 and 45 years.
