Module Milk Procurement
Introduction
The demand for milk and milk products is increasing rapidly, especially in urban areas. The efficient supply of raw milk can become a bottleneck for any emerging dairy industry. A modern dairy company, whether it is private, government-owned, or a co-operative must buy milk in a highly competitive market. In-depth knowledge of milk procurement (quality, collection, payment, storage and treatment of raw milk before processing) is an essential prerequisite for a profitable dairy enterprise.
For whom it is intended
• Managers of small to medium scale dairy enterprises.
• Milk procurement managers and officers of large scale dairy enterprises.
• Staff dealing with milk procurement including staff of milk collection centres.
• Consultants, trainers and lecturers active in the dairy sector.
• Officials representing governments and/or dairy authorities dealing with food hygiene, milk quality and health.
Your final destination
The course provides the participants with the latest insights, knowledge and skills for procuring the best quality milk given their local circumstances.
Content of training/course
The course includes composition and basic characteristics of milk, milking systems and storage of milk on the farm, milk collection (transport, collection centres, milk reception at the plant), storage of raw milk at the plant, quality control tests of raw milk, payment of raw milk, and cleaning and disinfecting. One day will be spent on the production of yoghurt.
Methods:
All training is based on the concept of “learning by doing”. Because of this concept the group size is kept small, with a maximum of 8 participants. Each participant has the opportunity to study and practise different concepts and techniques for which ample time will be made available. The PTC+ teaching staff will discuss intensively with the students how to apply what they have learned in their own situation. This approach ensures that participants will obtain an impressive amount of knowledge and skills relevant to their own working situation. Two small scale milk processing plants equipped with machinery of different technology levels are the main training tools. Analysis of milk and dairy products is carried out in two appropriately equipped laboratories.
Preliminary training required
• An agricultural education or training.
• Relevant experience.
• Competence in the English language.
