Module Economics, administration, financial and technical analysis

Introduction

Due to the increasing world population, urbanisation and changing dietary habits the demand for milk and milk products is increasing rapidly, particularly in developing countries. As a result many (developing) countries are stimulating the development of their dairy sector. Dairy development is however a complex issue. The correct recording, processing and analysing of information is often neglected at the farm level. Decision making based on inadequate or incomplete information will not lead to optimal technical and financial performance. This course provides dairy farm managers with the tools for proper farm recording and analysing techniques in order to make well-informed management decisions.

For whom it is intended

Middle level and managerial staff of large scale private, government owned, or co-operative dairy farms; staff of training institutes (dairy farm management); and staff of advisory services dealing with all management aspects of large scale dairy farms.

Your final destination

The objective of all commercial dairy farmers is to make a profit. The costs and quantities of inputs in combination with the technical results achieved and the output (milk) prices determine whether a dairy farm is commercially viable and therefore sustainable. To optimise the financial result a dairy farm manager has to be able to analyse the technical and financial results of his/her dairy farm. Based on this analysis the manager should be able to pinpoint weak spots in the enterprise and make plans to improve these weaknesses.

Content of training/course

Farm economics, (computerised) dairy farm administration systems, and systems for analysing and judging the technical and financial performance of dairy farms.

Methods:
All training is based on the concept of “learning by doing”. Because of this concept the group size is kept small, with a maximum of 8 participants. Each participant has the opportunity to study and practise different concepts and techniques for which ample time will be made available. The PTC+ teaching staff will discuss intensively with the students how to apply what they have learned in their own situation. This approach ensures that participants will obtain an impressive amount of knowledge and skills relevant to their own working situation. Course assignments in which participants analyse and compare their home situations with each other, in addition to excursions to dairy farms and dairy farm related institutions complete the course. The dairy farm of PTC+ Oenkerk is the main training tool for the participants.
