Submenu Training
Module Forage production, Feeding and Feeding systems
Introduction
Due to the increasing world population, urbanisation and changing dietary habits the demand for milk and milk products is increasing rapidly; particularly in developing countries. As a result many (developing) countries are stimulating the development of their dairy sector.
Dairy development is however a complex issue. The main constraint for an increase in milk production lies in the supply of quality forages and the adequate adjustment of the ration of the cows.
This course provides the tools for dairy farm managers to effectively manage the forage production and feeding of their dairy cows in an optimal way in accordance with the latest developments.
For whom it is intended
Middle level and managerial staff of large scale dairy farms; either private, co-operatives or government owned, staff of training institutes (dairy farm management) and staff of advisory services dealing with all management aspects of large scale dairy farms.
Your final destination
This course provides the participants with the latest information on forage production, nutrition and feeding systems for dairy herds, which will enable them to improve the technical performance on their own farm.
Content of training/course
Production of sufficient roughage of good quality in combination with proper feeding management are the foundation for optimal technical and financial results on commercial dairy farms all over the world. The main subjects covered in this module are: roughage production, conservation
and utilisation systems, feeding plans, quality aspects of feed stuffs, ration calculation, calf and young stock rearing and mechanised feeding systems.
Methods:
All training is based on the concept of “learning by doing”. Because of this concept the group size is kept small, with a maximum of 8 participants. Each participant has the opportunity to study and practise different concepts and techniques for which ample time will be made available. The PTC+ teaching staff will discuss intensively with the students how to apply what they have learned in their own situation. This approach ensures that participants will obtain an impressive amount of knowledge and skills relevant to their own working situation. Course assignments in which participants have to analyse and compare their home situations with each other, plus excursions to dairy farms and dairy farm related institutions complete the course. The dairy farm of PTC+ Oenkerk is the main training tool for the participants.
